How to save $3550 when your baby arrives!
New parents are often looking for ways to save money, and there's one method
of parenting which can put $3550 in your family's pocket. Consider how
breastfeeding
can save you money over bottlefeeding:
| Formula | $1000 |
| Health care costs | $1400 |
| Orthodontia | $1050 |
| Bottles, nipples, and supplies | $100 |
| Grand Total | $3550 |
- Formula: the average family in America spends between $800 and $1200
per
year on formula. We'll round off to $1000.
- Health care costs: Kaiser has estimated the additional costs in the
first
year of life for a baby that is bottlefed to be around $1400. For parents with
insurance, this amount will be less. Some parents won't have adequate
insurance, or enough money to visit the doctor as often as they would like.
- Orthodontia: breastfed babies turn into children who need
orthodontia about
50% less than other children. Orthodontia costs about $3000 per child. The
average
child has about a 70% chance of needing orthodontia. 70% * 50% * 3000 = $1050.
Some breastfeeding costs to consider:
- Some working mothers will want a professional pump. Cost, $250.
- Nursing bras tend to be more expensive than regular bras, add $10 per bra,
7 bras, cost is an additional $70.
- Nursing mothers need more food than bottlefeeding mothers. Cost to
the family of about $200 the first year.
