The Nursing Baby - Q&ABonnie asks: My baby is almost 6 weeks old, and so far nursing is going fine except for my sore nipples! They feel irritated when I'm not nursing, and the initial latch-on is usually painful. After a few seconds or maybe a few minutes, the pain disappears for the duration of the feeding. I feel she is latching on properly so I'm unsure why I am still having pain. Bonnie, there could be a latch problem, or possibly yeast is the culprit. I'd advise checking with an IBCLC certified lactation consultant. You may find some of Dr. Newman's handouts on Sore Nipples and Using Gentian Violet to be informative. Hoping nursing quickly becomes pain-free for you! These tips are not intended to be medical advice. Please consult your healthcare provider if you have questions.
