The Nursing Baby - Q&A

Christina asks:
I had to stop breastfeeding my newborn due to an infection I developed (due to my cracked nipples and bleeding). How can I start to eliminate the Milk supply to my breasts so I can go back to normal. Help me I am in lot's of pain and cold compresses don't help. I feel like a milk factory.

Probably the worst thing for an infection is to wean cold turkey. But if the infection is over and your discomfort is due solely to engorgement, use all the tips which help engorgement, including:

  • ibuprofen
  • cabbage leaves (they *don't* have to be cold!)
  • express milk when in discomfort - just enough to relieve the pain
  • DON'T wear a tight bra - this will encourage a bout of mastitis when you need it least!
I hope you are soon out of discomfort! If you decide to nurse another baby, I strongly suggest lining up an IBCLC certified lactation consultant before the birth. She can help prevent sore nipples, bleeding, and other nursing difficulties.
