The Nursing Baby - Q&A

One new mom asks:

Our first baby was born on July 8 of this year. I have recovered well and my health is excellent. My husband and I are considering having another baby right away; perhaps trying to conceive in September. What affect will nursing have on the health of a fetus?

The fetus is generally perfectly safe while nursing. See Can I nurse while pregnant? and Safe to Nurse during Pregnancy?.

However, nursing without supplements, and on demand (through the night as well), generally provides up to 98% protection from pregnancy during the first 6 months postpartum. The LAM site explains more about how breastfeeding relates to fertility.

Some women have been known to try to space out at least one 5 hour plus separation between two feedings, in order to encourage the return of fertility. Fertility during breastfeeding tends to be a very individual thing, there are no guarantees when your period returns. Oftentimes, a woman is not fertile for the first several months after her period returns. Other women get pregnant 4 weeks postpartum while breastfeeding.

I wish you luck in conceiving!
