The Nursing Baby - Q&A

One working mother asks:

I am a working mother of a 3-month old baby. I have had a very hard time maintaining ANY milk supply, let alone enough to feed him. I haven't given up yet, and my main concern is increasing my supply as he gets older...I understand that as his appetite increases, he will nurse more often to stay satisfied. How is it possible to increase my milk supply along with him, if I am away from him for 10 or so hours each day? Please...HELP!!!

It definitely *can* be difficult to keep up when you are a working mom. You will have to nurse more at night than other moms do. Family bedding can be a big advantage to a working mother, and help decrease the amount of milk you need to pump during the day.

Spend your weekends relaxing and nursing with your baby. Follow all the pumping tips we suggest, and remember to take it easy.

And remember that the amount you pump is unrelated to your love for your baby! If it becomes too stressful to pump enough milk during the day, use supplements as needed. Just be sure to *only* nurse when you are together, and you should be able to preserve the nursing relationship!

I wish you great luck combining mothering and working. It is a big challenge, and very stressful! Happy Nursing!
