The Nursing Baby - Q&A

Can I take diet pills if I am still breastfeeding my 9 month old baby?

Diet pills are rarely recommended by doctors for the vast majority of overweight women, whether they are nursing or not.

Most drugs pass through the milk at about a 1% dose. Exactly how that dose affects your baby will depend on the exact drug and the dosage.

The most sensible weight loss plan in existence is the Weight Watcher's Plan for Nursing Mothers. As the mother of a 9 month old, you may even find their regular plan works well as well (the older your nursling, the more established your milk supply is and the less you need to worry about dieting affecting milk supply). I would strongly urge you to plan a weight loss that involves cutting back on calories and increasing exercise, and keep your weight loss no more than 2 pounds per week.

Good luck losing weight, and keeping it off!
