The Nursing Baby - Q&A

One mother asks:

It has been 5 months since I stopped nursing my son. (I nursed him for a year). I was pregnant (only 7 weeks) with twins but unfortunatly miscarried them. I started leaking sticky, thick (appearance is like breastmilk). Is this normal?

First, let me say how sorry I am for your losses.

Yes, your body may have started leaking colostrum for the twins you lost. Colostrum is stickier and thicker as it has around twice the protein and twice the fat as regular breastmilk. Your hormones were probably in quite a whirl, with the loss of two pregnancies. A mother of twins generates more hormones than mothers of singletons and some face more serious engorgement problems after a normal delivery. As long as you do not develop mastitis, there is not much to worry about, and the leaking is normal.

I hope you are feeling well. Take care of yourself & God Bless.
