The Nursing Baby - Q&A

One mother asks:

I have a question for you, I hope you can help me. I am a police officer and I am nursing my baby girl. She is 7 months old. The question is will wearing my vest cause problems? I have not been wearing it. I tried one day but just felt too much pressure. I work 11 hour shift, 4 days on and 4 days off. I pump twice while at work, usually around 10:30 and 3:30. I am worried about infections and any other problems that may result in wearing the vest. Thank you.

Is this a heavy bullet proof vest you are speaking of? If that's the case...you may want to risk a plugged duct rather than risk your life!

Be sure you have plenty of nursing pads as increased pressure leads to more leaking.

You will find that engorgement tends to ease a bit around 9 months, which isn't very far away for you.

Please protect your life and handle any nursing complications as they arise. A plugged duct is less likely if the vest does not poke or apply pressure over the mammary glands. Be sure you are wearing a comfortable bra with no seams or underwire on any breast tissue, and aim to adjust your vest to come up to your collar bone if it adjusts that high, so it doesn't dig into any tissue.
