The Nursing Baby - Q&AChristine asks: I have a 7 month old baby who refuses to take anything but breastmilk is there anything I can do? I would like to wean her since I am not producing as much. I also would like to know if it is safe to give a baby goat milk? Dear Christine, Every bite your baby takes is part of weaning, and lessens her dependence on breastmilk. She may not be interested in bottles of formula, but she may be intrigued by sippy cups of water or formula. Please don't try juice - many babies will wean to this more easily but it is not a healthy choice for replacing breastmilk or fomula. In fact, juice has the unique distinction of being both the leading cause of obesity and malnutrition in American youngsters, and the AAP does not recommend any juice for babies under a year. It is true that goat milk, in general, is considered closer to human milk than cow's milk is. Of course, formula is designed to replicate the basic nutrition of breastmilk and does so better than plain goat's milk can. The AAP currently recommends that mothers use formula to replace breastmilk if they choose to wean before their infants are a year. Goat's milk can be an excellent milk replacement for babies over a year. Not only do the protein and fat levels more closely resemble breastmilk, but there aren't growth hormones and antiobiotics to concern a health conscious parent. It's definitely a milk to consider if your weaned baby rejects cow's milk as it is generally considered more nutritious than soy milk or other milk replacements. Christine, from your question I am not sure if you are choosing to wean because you are ready, or because you have concerns over low milk supply. Many 7 month old babies still need to nurse as often as they did when younger. If you want to increase your supply, we sell several Milk Increasers as well as have information on low milk supply. On the other hand, if you are choosing to wean now, remember to take it slowly, and the experience will be easier both on you and your baby. These tips are not intended to be medical advice. Please consult your healthcare provider if you have questions.
