The Nursing Baby - Your Breastfeeding Stories

Jacob Quinn is our beautiful, happy, healthy, thriving son, born June 22, 1997. He loves his "Nuk". I chose to breastfeed years ago, and knew if I could, I would. I was lucky enough to find a lc within our family tree. Rich my DH, said to his cousin David that I was planning on bfing. He said "Oh, then she should contact my MIL Sue. She's an LC with LLL." So, I attended my first meeting and was warmly embraced. I was 6 mo. at the time and very concerned, as I had many friends who bf and gave up after a month or two. It was discouraging. But then I found out why they had so many problems with supply and soreness. So many of them gave the baby pacifiers and bottles on the side when they "didn't have the time". I found support with LLL and became even more determined. I had a ton of advice and was very excited. I was ready to face any problem that might arise. Day one with Jake, right after birth, they gave him to me. I tried to feed him, and guess what - Tounge thrust. Oh no?! Help! The LC from the hospital was NOWHERE and so I called Sue. At 10:30 p.m. she came by. I told her I tried five times, he'd suckle for a while, then his tounge would get in the way and I'd be out. She taught me the football hold and we were on our way. The soreness, oh...did I ever have soreness. I am reddish brown hair with green eyes and very fair skin. No one mentioned that it would hurt for quite a while. They just mentioned the engorgement. So...on we went. I suffered thru and almost gave up due to lack of family support SIL and DH were concerned that I didn't realize how much time he would consume nor how much Jake would depend on me. And my DH was jealous of what I could do, and he could not. But Jake and I forged on. We have been feeding for 6 months this Monday. I am so excited. The only problems, Thrush - which is currently being treated - agressively, as my pediatrician feels it's best to nip in the bud! We were planning originally on weaning about this time, but I will when Jacob is ready and willing. He's been introduced to solids since 4 mo, as he'd get all excited everytime he saw you eat. Tried Nuk at that time, but he wanted what I was having. Nope, no can do. But he's nursing 5 to 7 times a day with solids in between. Exclusively at night. We offer solids and then offer nuk if he refuses solids. He likes both, but "hhmmmuma" is the best for him when he's sleepy or needs a rejuvination.

I am VERY happy to have chosen bfing. He is a very healthy, beautiful, loving little boy. When he looks up at me and smiles with milk spilling down his cheek and coos quietly at me, it helps me dig my heels in and say PHOOIE to everyone who's against bfing.

Breast is Best, especially for my boy! Stand your ground and remember, Michael Jordan was BF to age 3, and Michael Jackson, not at all. Which one would you want your child to aspire to be?
