  • Just What is Attachment Parenting?

There is no one definition of attachment parenting which will be right for every mother/father and baby/child pair, but there are some ideas which help to foster attachment. Ideas such as nursing and practicing child-led weaning. Ideas such as sharing the family bed. Ideas such as wearing their babies and avoiding prolonged mother-baby separation.

Attachment parents generally share the philosophy that a need that is not met as a child is likely to cause problems as an adult. An attachment parent may feel that what one parent views as a healthy independence in a toddler could actually be a harmful show of detachment. Attachment parents often look for non-punitive methods of discipline.

An attachment parent feels that nursing and family bedding are not unhealthy habits which need to be broken, but signs of healthy parent/child bonding which should be nurtured and cherished for as long as all parties wish.

The term attachment parenting was coined by the pediatrician Dr. William Sears, author of a fabulous baby book entitled, The Baby Book. The ideas espoused by the doctor flowed out of his own experience with his eight children, and are well founded on many years of study of children. Some of these ideas originated earlier in the century by Dr. Bowlby's attachment studies.

Attachment parenting is, perhaps, the antithesis of accepted Western parenting techniques today. It is not, however, something new, but it is a style of close parenting which has been practiced successfully for thousands of years. It doesn't require cribs, bottles, formulas, baby mushes, strollers, or other parenting paraphernalia, it just requires one baby and mother, together, learning what life is all about.

  • How can I stop my baby from biting?
See our article, Taking the Bite out of Breastfeeding, for ideas on eliminating and preventing this problem.

  • Q&A column
See our Q&A column for over a 100 questions and answers asked by our customers. There are Q&As on sharing sleep, night nursing, alcohol and breastfeeding, weaning, pumping, solids, and more!
  • When can we start carrying our baby in an Over the Shoulder Baby Holder?
One day old is a perfect time to start. A baby fresh out of the womb loves the tight closeness, sounds, warmth, feel, and movement of this familiar surrounding and feels insecure when isolated in the western world's world of cribs, strollers, and mechanical swings that hold the baby "away".
  • How old can my baby be and still carry him/her in the Over the Shoulder Baby Holder?
There is no age or weight limit. As long as you hold your baby in your arms - usually 2 or 3 years.
  • When do I start solids with my baby?
See our article, Starting Solids with Your Breastfed Baby to find out ideas on when to start and how much to give your breastfed baby.
  • Is baby wearing (sling wearing) healthy for my back?
The largest Baby Magazine in the U.S. compared it to the best traditional fornt and back packs and wrote, "Over the Shoulder Baby Holder ... allows yo9u to carry your baby in a avariety of natural positions, including on your hip so you don't strain or injure your back."
  • Why an Over the Shoulder Baby Holder sling?

Other slings are similar in concept, position, ages, health advantages and psychological benefits, however, there are some distinct differences that buyers much prefer. When parents can see both, they almost always choose ours.

    1. *** Over the Shoulder Baby Holder is the only sling to receive the seal of approval from America's #1 parenting resource, the National Parenting Center.
    2. An independent review by Jean Liedloff's Continuum Concept Network found our slings to have a deeper pouch and other features superior and safer than any other sling on the market.
    3. The OTSB Holder has a patented safety feature of a small nylon rod discreetly sewn into the bottom portion of the tail to prevent it from slipping through the rings if worn incorrectly.
    4. Over the Shouldr Baby Holder has two times the amount of padding on the parent's shoulder, and around the baby's head and legs. It's more expensive to manufacture, but the quality shows.
    5. Our batting is paneled or sewn down; it cannot slip inside the seam into the adjusting portion making it impossible to adjust. Sewing the batting down also prevents the batting from bunching up and twisting around while wearing or during washing.
    6. Our batting is flame-retardant. This is not an added chemical that will wash out. Other slings have a resin added that makes it easier to cut and sew, but it's highly flammable and allergenic. Not having our batting treated with this resin is also much softer to the touch and does not "mat" down.
    7. We have a string tie that holds the side rails together over the shoulder pillows; this doubles our already plush padding and prevents the sides from falling down toward mom's elbows or pressing into her neck, thus keeping the whole sling in better proportion for the wearer.
    8. Our designer fabrics fit fashions. We typically stock 3 to 4 dozen soft pastels, stripes, solids, florals, Guatemalan, southwest, batik, Hawaiian and country prints. Mom can look good while she holds her baby close.
    9. Our fabrics are cool breathable low allergenic 100% cotton or mostly cotton-poly blends. We have 3 sizes to comfortably fit any size parent. Petite for people under 5 ft and under 100 lbs, Regular, and long for parents (mostly moms) over 170 lbs or 5'10" tall.
    10. We have one price for all our fabrics and sizes.
    11. Our instructions are more clear and detailed; this produces happier users and less returns. Our instructions show a larger variety of positions to carry the baby and a variety of different age babies mom can relate to.
    12. We have a network of natural childbirth educators and lactation consultants who continually supply feed-back and we respond, making changes immediately because we're made in the U.S.A. Our slings are professionally sewn on industrial sewing machines, by professional seamstresses, so each and every one comes out perfectly even, consistent, and high quality. They are not sewn in Asia or unsupervised on a "hobby machine."
  • Isn't my baby too big to be carried in that?
Let's analyze this. Most babies are carried in the arms a good two years. The larger your child gets, the more strenous it is to hold him/her. So, the larger your child gets, the more you physically need the assist of our superior sling which distributes the weight evenly all over your torso.
  • Isn't the baby "squished up" in there, his head looks crooked?
Remember he has been nine months in the womb upside down in a "ball". It's natural and comforting for him to be swaddled in his new "womb". For new users, don't be afraid to simply lift him and reposition him. For example, if his head is cocked, reposition him the same way you would if you were using your arms.
  • Can the baby fall out of it?
It's designed with a hammock effect which holds the baby secure. Parents in various cultures do daily strenuous work carrying their children in this fashion. As you become accustomed to wearing your baby you instinctively have a feel for how secure it is and carry your baby all day in a carefree manner.
  • What about nursing on the other side?
Most moms find it easiest to nurse with their baby's head at the breast opposite the rings, so it is easier to change the sling to the opposite shoulder to nurse the second breast. Or, some just turn the baby around.
  • Is the fabric thick enough?
We carefully select a weight of fabric that is strong enough to hold several hundred pounds. Because the baby's weight is evenly distributed, it isn't necessary for the fabric to be thick or heavy. The ideal weight fabric is still cool and breathable and easy to adjust.
  • How safe are the buckles?
The hard nylon sling rings (buckles) are tested over several hundred pounds. The weight of the baby causes them to tighten the way a seat belt tightens. The nylon is not affected by the temperature of washing or drying. There is an additional ring sewn into the tail which prevents it from slipping through.
  • How do I wash it?
We recommend machine wash, gentle cycle, hang dry. Rembmer they are cotton and not pre-shrunk. Most slings dry overnight in our experience.
